Digesting the sermon through the week
One of the early prayers of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer says:
Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; grant us that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them; that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our savior Jesus Christ.
This is the attitude we need to the word of God! Archbishop Cramner who wrote this prayer hit the nail on the head. How are you going processing the word from Psalm 81 on Sunday? Craig writes some reflections to help us ‘read, mark, learn and inwardly digest’ this Psalm:
How did you go with my challenge from Sunday concerning Psalm 81? If you missed Sunday, jump onto Youtube to watch the sermon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFw8NldnLb8) or listen to it on Spotify. For those there on Sunday, how did you go using the verse ‘With honey from the rock I would satisfy you’ this week? Did you find it helpful in your work week or with your regular commitments? Was it useful to you when you were tempted to do something you shouldn’t? Did it enable you to enjoy God’s gifts to you in a way that honours the Giver rather than idolising the gift?
One area that I didn’t mention that I could add is trying to find a way to mention it in a conversation with someone who doesn’t trust Jesus. Helping others to see that true satisfaction comes from God, not apart from him could be a helpful piece of the puzzle for someone who you are praying will come to know and follow Jesus.
I’d be very ‘satisfied’ to hear any strange ways that you may have come up with to use this phrase. Could you write it somewhere where you will see it regularly? Of course, you wouldn’t need to stick with verse 16. Your phrase could be from other parts of the psalm too; ‘Open wide your mouth and I will fill it’, or ‘If only’. That said, maybe you have a favourite phrase from another psalm that does this job or similar. Either way, having God’s Word in our mouths is always satisfying; satisfaction you can count on.
We look forward to dipping into Psalm 8 this Sunday. See you then!
Grace and peace,
Mark
