The Wisdom and the Power of the Cross

This past week, our staff team shared devotionally around a simple but powerful question: What is a favourite Bible verse about the cross and resurrection—and why? As we prepare our hearts for Easter, it was deeply encouraging to reflect on the staggering beauty and meaning of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

One shared about the thief on the cross beside Jesus—how even in his final moments, he recognised who Jesus was, and was promised paradise. Others reflected on the ancient prophecy of Isaiah 53, which so vividly points to the suffering servant who would be pierced for our transgressions.

One verse in particular has stayed with me for years—1 Corinthians 1:18: “For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is the power of God to us who are being saved.”

The cross—an instrument of humiliation and shame—was where Jesus paid the ransom for our souls. What seemed weak and foolish in human eyes was, in fact, the ultimate display of God’s power and wisdom. Three days later, his resurrection proved it!

As we invite people to church this Easter, we will see different responses. Some will see the message as weak and foolish. But others, by God’s grace, will see in it the power of God to save.

So don’t lose heart—keep inviting. Because the message we share is the wisdom and the power of God.
